McFarland's volunteer-built 1994 rink: south central Wisconsin's first Olympic sheet, now with a second rink.
No public skating is posted for the next 7 days. New sessions show here as soon as the rink posts them.
McFarland's hockey began outdoors in 1977, when the group that became McFarland Youth Hockey Association skated at Lewis Park and shoveled the rink before every practice and game. From 1983, weekly bingo at the Park Ponderosa Ballroom raised money toward an indoor arena, and a deal for land on Harvey Peterson's farm on the north edge of the village gave the rink its site.
Ground was broken in April 1994 with UW coach Jeff Sauer among those attending, and the arena opened that September with a public open skate during the McFarland Family Festival weekend. Its Spartan Rink was the first Olympic-size sheet in south central Wisconsin. McFarland High School Hockey, the youth association and adult recreational leagues are based here, and the independently owned non-profit also hosts figure skating exhibitions and speed skating nationals.
Solar panels arrived on Earth Day 2024 and are expected to generate about 7.86 million kilowatt-hours over 30 years. In May 2025, nine months after groundbreaking, an expansion added the 50-by-90-foot Starion Bank training rink, a high school locker room and an athletic training center.
