Minnesota Gopher men’s hockey’s home arena since 1993, named for coach John Mariucci
3M Arena at Mariucci opened in 1993 and is the home arena for the Minnesota Golden Gophers men’s ice hockey team. It is named after John Mariucci, the longtime Gopher coach who is considered the “godfather of Minnesota hockey.” From 1950 to 1993 the hockey team played in the hockey arena section of Williams Arena.
The ice sheet was Olympic size until the fall of 2023, when a renovation shrank it to a hybrid 200 by 89 feet, replaced the ice plant and brought capacity to 10,257. Ridder Arena, the home of Golden Gopher women’s hockey, is next door and connected by an underground tunnel.
The arena has been a top site for NCAA regional action, hosting the West Regional in 2000, 2003, 2005 and 2009, and it hosted the 2006 NCAA Women’s Frozen Four. The state high school hockey tournament holds its consolation bracket here, and the largest crowd to watch a game at Mariucci, 10,774, came on March 19, 2022. The glassed-in entrance holds original brick from Memorial Stadium and a display dedicated to the legendary John Mariucci.
