A relocated, reassembled tennis club turned hockey rink, rebuilt and reopened in September 2018
The White Bear Lake Sports Center is a 38,000-square-foot building that was relocated, reassembled and re-purposed before it became a rink; its ice area was converted from tennis courts. The White Bear Lake Area Hockey Association used the former tennis club turned rink, and its enrollment grew to 900 players.
By the 2018 reopening the floor had cracked and the refrigeration system had begun to leak. The city held a ribbon-cutting on Saturday, September 29, 2018, and Mayor Jo Emerson drove the Olympia through a red ribbon onto ice made by the new refrigeration system. The skate school and the hockey association's players were in the crowd.
The rebuilt building has new bleachers under translucent roof panels that let in daylight, and a refrigeration room with capacity for a second sheet of ice in the future. Besides hockey and skating, the building is used for racquetball and wallyball.
