Opened in December 1969 and still owned and run by Independent School District 622
Polar Arena opened to the public in December 1969 and has been owned and operated by Independent School District 622 ever since. It is one of two arenas the district runs, the other being Tartan Arena in Oakdale.
The arena is the home rink of the North High School boys' and girls' hockey teams, the Tartan Area Youth Hockey Association and the Maplewood Figure Skating Club. North High's hockey alumni include Bret Hedican, class of 1988, who went on to a professional playing career; Troy Ward, class of 1980, who coached professionally with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Houston Aeros and Abbotsford Heat; and Allie Thunstrom, class of 2006, who played for the NWHL's Minnesota Whitecaps.
Beyond team ice, the district runs its own public sessions here under arena manager Eric Edhlund: a Winter Open Skate with music for all ages and skill levels, and a Friday Night Fun Skate under the lights with a DJ, games and treats.
