A 1962 county arena that hosted the first two girls' state hockey tournaments
No public skating is posted for the next 7 days. New sessions show here as soon as the rink posts them.
Aldrich Arena was built in 1962 and is named after Gene Aldrich, one of the founders of the Minnesota State High School Hockey Tournament. It has one regulation 200-by-85-foot sheet and 3,200 seats in the stands, and the St. Paul Rangers of the old Central Professional Hockey League used it for practices and occasional games.
Each fall and winter it is the host site for more than 100 high school league and playoff games, and it went down in history as the home of the first two girls' state hockey tournaments. In 1995 the Minnesota Blue Ox of Roller Hockey International played 12 home games here, and on January 22, 1998, Minnesota's new NHL team was announced at Aldrich as the Minnesota Wild.
Once the ice comes out, the building converts quickly for graduations, concerts, craft shows and farmers markets. A visit can easily bring back memories of the Met Center in Bloomington, the old home of the North Stars.
