Ken Yackel-West Side Arena opened in 1973, one of the Ramsey County arenas erected in the 1970s. Its design matches White Bear, Pleasant, Biff Adams and Highland arenas. It has one NHL-size sheet and seats 300.
The arena honors Ken Yackel, a West Side native who played hockey, baseball and football at the University of Minnesota. He played on the 1952 US Olympic hockey team that won silver in Oslo, then appeared in six games for the 1958-59 Boston Bruins, three of them in the Stanley Cup Finals.
In 1962 Yackel started one of Minnesota's first day hockey schools with Lefty Smith at Wakota Arena in South St. Paul, and he was enshrined in the United States Hockey Hall of Fame in 1986. From October through early March the arena is heavily used by youth hockey and an in-line skating group.
