West Lebanon's 1988 replacement for Dartmouth's Davis Rink, home ice for Hanover and Lebanon high schools
James W. Campion III Rink held its official opening on February 27, 1988, at Sachem Field in West Lebanon. It replaced Davis Rink, the 1920s building that was Dartmouth's main ice until Thompson Arena opened in 1975 and that youth hockey and figure skating used until it was razed in 1985. Upper Valley residents and businesses funded the new rink, named for James W. Campion III, and the Hanover Improvement Society Community Rink Inc. runs it on user fees.
The building is 220 by 130 feet around a regulation 200-by-85-foot sheet with seating for 450. A brick-and-granite wall in the lobby came out of Davis Rink, and in 2020 the ice still ran on Davis's salvaged under-ice piping, one of the few sand-floored rinks left in New England. The Hanover Hockey Association, the Skating Club at Dartmouth, dating to the 1940s, the Tuck School and the Hanover and Lebanon high school teams share the ice with 18 other organizations. Hanover's girls hockey team, the first varsity program at a New Hampshire public school, played its first game here on December 12, 1990.
A renovation's first phase, completed in 2023 after a $5 million fundraising campaign, brought new locker rooms and lobby improvements. A planned second phase replaces the concrete slab, under-ice piping, boards, glass and bleachers.
