Rochester's city rink, rooted in the youth hockey league pediatrician Richard Roy built from 1969
Rochester's indoor rink grew out of youth hockey. In 1969, boards donated from Berwick Academy's outdoor rink replaced the rink on the Rochester school grounds, and pediatrician Richard Roy, the first pediatrician on staff at Frisbee Memorial Hospital, enlisted parents and local businesses to outfit four neighborhood teams. That four-team league was the start of the Rochester Youth Hockey Association. With Roy as president for its first three years, the association grew to more than 200 players, and he put the money it raised toward a down payment on a new indoor rink in town, with local businesses behind it.
In 2008 the Rochester Ice Arena was renamed the Dr. Roy Ice Arena in his honor. It is home to Rochester Youth Hockey's Rochester Blackhawks, and the city's police and fire departments hold community skates here: a Skate with a Cop day with a charity game against Spaulding alumni in March 2024, and a Skate with a First Responder day in March 2026.
