A covered outdoor rink named for Capitals founder Charlie Heger; closed in 2023 and reopened in 2024
Currently out of season Jersey City Recreation's page says the Pershing Field Charlie Heger Ice Rink will officially open in November 2026, with more announcements coming soon. Official schedule update
The Charlie Heger Ice Rink at Pershing Field is an outdoor, covered rink on Summit Avenue, named for Charlie Heger, the founder and executive director of the Jersey City Capitals youth hockey program. The Capitals have called it home for over 30 years, and it is also home to teams from Hudson Catholic, Hoboken High School, Weehawken High School and St. Peter's Prep.
The rink's refrigeration and chilling system failed after 30 years of use, and the rink closed in early 2023, pushing the Capitals and the high school teams to other rinks. Jersey City's spokeswoman said it needed major repairs after decades of short-term fixes. After the city council funded the work, the rink reopened on November 13, 2024.
Jersey City Recreation lists the rink as officially opening in November 2026.
