A skating rink has sat on the lower plaza of Rockefeller Center since 1936, when it replaced retail space below ground level that had proved unprofitable. It was meant as a temporary measure, but it became an immediate tourist attraction on opening and was later counted among the most famous skating rinks in the world.
A permanent 120-by-60-foot rink went in during 1939, which required replacing the plaza's center staircase from the Channel Gardens. The ice lies in the sunken plaza at the front of 30 Rock, at the foot of Paul Manship's gilded bronze Prometheus statue of 1934.
The Center's Christmas tree tradition dates to December 1931, when construction workers raised a modest 20-foot tree on the site. Starting in 2022, a roller rink called Flipper's Roller Boogie Palace was also set up on the lower plaza from April to October.
