Successor to Lasker Rink
The Gottesman Rink is the winter face of the Davis Center at the Harlem Meer, a seasonal ice rink and swimming pool at the southwest corner of the Meer in Central Park's north end. It replaces Lasker Rink, which opened on December 22, 1966, after flooding destroyed its original mechanical systems and delayed it by nearly ten months; chronic flooding dogged it for the next fifty years.
Lasker was known to New Yorkers as the less crowded, less expensive alternative to Wollman Rink, and it ran until 2021 before it was demolished. The City and the Central Park Conservancy set out to re-envision the site, broke ground in September 2021 and opened the Davis Center on April 26, 2025, letting water and people move again between the North Woods and the Meer.
Unlike Lasker, which was leased to private operators, the Davis Center is run directly by the Conservancy. In winter the 120-by-285-foot oval of the Gottesman Pool becomes the rink, beside a building faced in Adirondack stone, and the season brings Community Skate, Saturday-night Harlem Nights with a live DJ, freestyle ice, stick and puck, and Learn to Play lessons with the New York Rangers.
