Two column-free rinks on Pier 61

Sky Rink's home on the Hudson traces back to 1991, when Roland Betts' daughter, a competitive figure skater, trained mostly at the original Sky Rink on West 33rd Street near 10th Avenue. The search for a new site ended at Pier 61, which was long and wide enough for two rinks and entirely column-free, and Chelsea Piers opened there in 1995.

The pier holds two full-size rinks with music boxes, jump harnesses, home and away team benches and protective Plexiglas boards, plus climate-controlled locker rooms designed for both hockey players and figure skaters. Sunset Terrace, an event space with three walls of floor-to-ceiling windows, looks out over the water.

The NYC Cyclones, a Tier II/AA travel hockey program for 8U through 18U, train here. Since 2021 the Skating Club of New York and U.S. Figure Skating have hosted the John Nicks Pairs Challenge at the rink, named for the British former skater who became a coach in the United States.
