Volunteer-built boarded rink behind Fisher Heights Community Place

Fisher Heights Park's outdoor rink is a volunteer operation. Every winter a group of community members builds, maintains and runs a boarded rink, along with a small puddle rink for beginning skaters, on the lawn behind Fisher Heights Community Place. The Fisher Heights and Area Community Association (FHACA) administers the city-owned building day to day and takes on the rink each season.

Ice time is scheduled so that both hockey players and free skaters have a chance to enjoy the rink, and the rink is open as a self-serve venue until 11:00 pm. During supervised hours the change room and washrooms are open, supervisors help as requested and priority goes to recreational skating; outside those hours hockey is first come, first served.

The puddle rink has since been relocated onto the basketball court, where snowbanks form its borders. It has a hard base, and no hockey sticks, pucks or nets are allowed on it at any time. The boarded rink still goes up on the lawn behind the community building each winter.
