Town-owned rink and home ice for the Smithfield Figure Skating Club, founded in 1976
Smithfield Municipal Ice Rink is the Town of Smithfield's own rink, and the town rents its ice to youth, high school and adult groups from Smithfield and the surrounding Northern Rhode Island communities. It is home ice for the Smithfield Figure Skating Club, the Providence-Pawtucket Figure Skating Club, the Northern Rhode Island Viking Youth Hockey Program, the Rhode Island Saints Hockey Club and the Smithfield High School varsity hockey team.
The Smithfield Figure Skating Club was formed by a group of local skaters in 1976 and joined the United States Figure Skating Association two years later, in 1978. Its programs and sessions run year-round at the rink.
The club hosted the New England Figure Skating Championships in 1987 and 1992, holds a Basic Skills Competition every year and has hosted the Smithfield Open in the past. For more than 25 years it also staged an annual figure skating exhibition to benefit the American Diabetes Association.
