The City of Syracuse’s enclosed rink at Meachem Park, rebuilt on an ice mat in 2014 and open year-round
Loading public skate, freestyle, and stick & puck times for John Dunn Ice Rink at Meachem Park…
The John Dunn Ice Rink at Meachem Park is an enclosed City of Syracuse rink on the South Side, in the Valley. In April 2014 its cooling system broke down, and a series of mechanical problems made it impossible to make ice. State Senator Dave Valesky and Assemblyman Bill Magnarelli secured state capital money for a new ice mat: the city lifted the boards, poured concrete and laid a mat with pipes that freeze the water on top, the same system used at Rockefeller Center, with skating set to return that October.
The new system let the rink stay open year-round, as it does today. It is home to Valley Hockey, Corcoran Hockey and several youth organizations, along with city skate programs, and in 2014 it was drawing about 24,000 skaters a year. The city calls it one of its most popular destinations and a favorite spot for many local hockey teams.
