Built on the site of the 1931 Midland Arena Gardens
The Bourgeois Community Centre stands where the Midland Arena Gardens once did. Opened in 1931, that arena was regarded as one of the most modern buildings of its kind in Canada, with a reinforced roof that did away with interior pillars. Besides hockey and skating, it hosted musical performances and wrestling matches featuring Whipper Billy Watson.
A fire during a renovation project in the summer of 1976 ended the building, and the Midland Centennial Arena replaced it two years later. The present centre was completed in 2004 as the North Simcoe Sports and Recreation Centre.
It is a fully accessible 118,000-square-foot facility with two NHL-sized ice surfaces, a double gymnasium, event spaces and the Midland Sports Hall of Fame. The Town of Midland and Bourgeois Auto Group have renamed it the Bourgeois Community Centre under a 10-year naming rights agreement. The centre stays Town-owned and Town-operated, and the plaques for those who helped build it in 2004 remain in place.
