Rebuilt with geothermal heat and an electric ice resurfacer
Skyway Community Centre replaced the old Skyway Arena on Kenwood Avenue. The City’s contractors began demolishing the old arena in October 2022, after a project that started in 2019 was paused by COVID-19 and by trouble with federal grants and the budget.
The new building was designed to use no gas at all, cutting annual emissions by about 85 per cent: geothermal and heat recovered from the refrigeration plant warm it, and a zero-emission electric resurfacer cleans the ice. Inside are a full-size ice pad, 61 by 26 metres with seating for 300, six change rooms and an indoor multi-use track.
The grand opening in September 2025 featured a NEXXICE synchronized skating performance and a sledge hockey demonstration. The federal Green and Inclusive Community Buildings program put CA$1 million toward the project.
