A 1977 community complex with a rebuilt ice slab
Brennan Park Recreation Centre has been at the heart of Squamish since 1977. The arena's original concrete ice slab and cooling system from 1977 were removed and replaced with a new refrigerated slab, an underslab heating system, and a raised viewing platform and ramp for spectators using wheelchairs.
The replacement reused the existing glass in the new dasher board system and the existing brine, recycled the concrete from the old slab and added a heat exchanger to the refrigeration. The centre serves over 65% of Squamish residents once or twice a week.
A deep retrofit meant to make the complex more accessible, inclusive and energy-efficient includes replacing the arena roof insulation, renovating the rink change rooms and adding accessible change rooms and showers with accessible rink access.
