Britannia's 1976 community rink
Britannia grew out of cooperative community action in the 1970s. Residents and civic agencies formed the organization in 1974, and the founders' list of priorities put an ice rink third, after a library and a swimming pool. The community buildings, library, pool, ice rink and elementary school were completed in 1976, and the official opening was on June 5 of that year.
The rink is part of a 17.04-acre complex that the Britannia Community Services Centre Society runs with the Vancouver School Board, the Vancouver Public Library Board, the Park Board and the City of Vancouver. It has a full-size ice surface of 200 by 80 feet and a mezzanine overlooking the ice that is often used for watching events.
The centre marks its 50th anniversary in 2026. That February it celebrated getting back on the ice with a free Family Day disco skate and the unveiling of new centre-ice art, and the Vancouver Adult Co-ed Hockey League plays here.
