A 1975 county-park rink on a floating concrete slab

Mercer County Skating Center officially opened on October 25, 1975, on more than five acres of Mercer County Park. Princeton architect Richard Charlton designed it, and the Scozzari Brothers of Trenton were the general contractors. The center was meant to give the public outdoor recreational skating regardless of weather conditions.

It is an open-air, sheltered rink of about 85 by 200 feet, with ice hockey boards, a permanent Plexiglas system, aluminum bleachers and an electronic clock and scoreboard surrounded by protective netting. The rink floor was built on a 5-inch floating slab of concrete.

The center is home to the Mercer Bulldogs special hockey team. Group lessons run on Saturday and Sunday mornings and Thursday evenings, each session lasting five weeks, with a half-hour group lesson and an hour of practice time each week.
