Biddeford Ice Arena was constructed in 1973 and opened in 1974 by two investors from Sanford, Maine. For its first four years it operated season to season, never knowing whether it would open the next year, and Portland Savings Bank played a major role in keeping it from being sold for other purposes.
In 1978 members of the Biddeford Youth Hockey Association formed the York County Recreation Association, raising money through car washes, spaghetti suppers and hosting hockey games. The Maine Mariners held their first scrimmage at the arena against the then Nova Scotia Voyageurs, and the York County Arena association was formed and gained non-profit status.
The association hired Andy Lefebvre as its first general manager. The Biddeford City Council decided to let voters decide by referendum whether the city should purchase the arena, and the city then leased it back to the association to continue operating the facility.
