Bensenville's 1997 answer to early-morning ice

The Edge on John Street opened in September 1997 in Redmond Park, on what had been an empty lot five months earlier. Bensenville officials had heard stories of local parents driving their kids to distant suburbs in the early morning for ice time, and an ambitious design-build schedule had crews constructing the building while the architect was still finishing the plans. The 34,000-square-foot rink cost the village more than $2.1 million.

Its single 200-by-90-foot sheet is wider than the ice at Chicago's United Center, laid over 660 tons of sand and 750,000 pounds of gravel with 10 miles of cooling pipes. A glass-walled 2,000-square-foot lobby lets people waiting in line watch the rink, and the building adjoins the Water's Edge Aquatic Center. In opening week Village President John Geils was the first to skate, and the Chicago Chill youth team played the first game.

With the two-sheet Edge II arena, the complex served as the Chicago Blackhawks' practice facility before Fifth Third Arena was built, was home to the USHL's Chicago Steel from 2000 to 2015, and now hosts the Roosevelt Lakers, local high school teams and the Chicago Blues adult league.
