Chicago Park District rink opened in 2015

Morgan Park Sports Center opened in September 2015 on two parcels the City of Chicago transferred to the Chicago Park District in 2014. In 2015 the District vacated part of Western Avenue to connect them into one 2.88-acre site for ice skating and gymnastics. Hockey teams began practicing on September 1, 2015, and a ribbon-cutting and a cosmic-themed skating event marked the official debut later that month.

The 64,000-square-foot building holds an NHL-size rink under the same roof as the gymnastics center. The Original Six League, a co-ed adult house league started in 2015, holds all of its games here across two seasons a year. In January 2018 the Chicago Horned Frogs Youth Hockey Club was in its first season, and high school hockey teams practiced at the center.

In 2018 every skater enrolled in classes was eligible for the center's Broadway-themed ice show in May, which coach Kathy Janik compared to a dance recital with sparkly costumes and bright lights. Ice time was at a premium at the busy center that year. The Chicago Park District owns the building; SMG, which also managed Soldier Field, ran it in 2018, and ASM Global manages it today.
