Aarhus Skøjtehal stands on the ground where an open-air rink, Århus Skøjtestadion, opened on Gøteborg Allé at the end of 1967 and gave the Skovbakken hockey players a home. Architect Jørgen Absalonsen was appointed to design the covered hall, and the project also added a cafeteria, meeting rooms, changing rooms, a kiosk and seats for 2,700 people. The first skaters on the new ice, on 9 November 1973, were the newly founded figure-skating club Århus Skøjte-Klub, which already had 80 members before its first outing. The hall was officially opened on 8 December 1973.
The first ice hockey match, Skovbakken against Silkeborg on 18 November, ended 10-3 and saw two spectators thrown out for throwing plastic onto the ice. Public sessions were well attended: the hall welcomed its 50,000th skater in March 1975, and Gasolin played a concert there that year. Today Aarhus Curling Klub, Ishockey Klubben Aarhus, Crykkediles and Aarhus Skøjteklub train in the hall, and Isdisco nights are held on selected Fridays and Saturdays through the season.
