A cooled rink on Jens Otto Krags Plads
In 2023 the rink on Jens Otto Krags Plads was 20 years old, and Randers Kommune put a typical winter at about 20,000 visitors on the ice. After many years of use its cooling pipes needed replacing, and the rink had not been put up the winter before because of the energy crisis. On 26 June 2023 the council decided to renovate it and to extend the operating agreement with Underværket by a year.
The ice is made with cooling pipes, so the rink cannot be frozen above 5 degrees and closes in such spells; it normally runs from December to the end of February. Underværket, a self-owned institution at Stemannsgade 9c, runs it, with a sauna and ice bath in the winter-break week and Friday outings with food on the ice.
