Dornbirn's ice hall opened with a skating show in November 1999
The Messestadion in Dornbirn was built in 1999 to plans by the architect Leopold Kaufmann as part of the Messe Dornbirn grounds, and it seats 4,270 spectators. The ice hall opened on 27 November 1999 with an opening show by the Eislaufverein Dornbirn, featuring Denise Bielmann, the 1981 European and World champion.
Two clubs call the building home: the Dornbirn Bulldogs ice hockey club, and the Eislaufverein Dornbirn, which had moved its training to the Rheintalkunsteisbahn in 1969 and has had its own ballet and dry-training room in the hall since 2009. Numerous clubs train here every week, and school classes are regular visitors.
The city's other ice surface, on the Höchsterstraße, closed for the 2018/19 winter because its ageing cooling plant could no longer run safely. Eight hockey clubs, the ice-stock shooters, public skating and school sport were affected, and schools and families could keep skating in the Messestadion.
