Vorarlberg's first ice hall, opened in January 1972
The Rheinhalle in Lustenau was the first ice hall in Vorarlberg. The municipal council voted unanimously on 10 March 1971 to build it, and it opened on 8 January 1972; until then only two places in the state had artificial ice rinks.
Public skating began the next day, 9 January 1972. In the first three weeks about 900 paying skaters came on each open day, and by 5 April, when the season ended, more than 60,000 visitors had been counted. The first year also brought the Berliner Eisrevue, with figure-skating stars Marei Langenbein and Hans-Jürgen Bäumler.
The hall, built in 1972 and thoroughly renovated around the turn of the millennium, holds about 2,200 spectators and is the home of EHC Lustenau. The Eislaufclub Lustenau and the Eisstockschützenclub Lustenau use it too. Each season opens in late summer with the clubs, and 2025 was the 54th.
