The Emscher-Lippe-Halle reopened for skating on 19 September 2026 after more than seven years.
In the 1980s and 1990s the Emscher-Lippe-Halle was one of the loudest places in Gelsenkirchen: when the Schalker Haie took the ice, thousands of fans packed the stands. During the NHL lockout of 1994/95 the club signed the Czech star Jaromír Jágr, who played a single league game for it and scored one goal with ten assists.
The hall is a multi-purpose arena inside the Sport-Paradies leisure complex, with a 30 by 60 metre ice surface from September to May. From the start of 2019 it stood dark, used as a Covid vaccination centre and as housing for refugees, until it was officially reopened on Saturday 19 September 2026.
Hundreds of skaters poured onto the ice for the first ice disco. The EHC Gelsenkirchen, successor to the Haie, sold more than 250 season tickets at its season opening, a record for many years, and a fan club was founded once the reopening was announced. The DJ who began at the ice disco in 2001 and worked the last one in 2019 was back at the decks. How long the ice will stay is still open.
