In 1909 Chief Building Councillor Eduard Engelmann created an open-air artificial-ice rink in Hernals, a world first. The family's sports ground goes back to a trade licence of 1871 for a rink in the garden, which its history page calls the official birth of the Engelmann ground. The association Kunsteisbahn auf dem Sportplatz Engelmann was formed in 1907 to help build the rink, and it still runs it as a non-profit club with mostly voluntary members.
Engelmann's motto was "through artificial ice to figure skating", and the ground was called the heart chamber of ice skating. Its champions include Herma Szabo, Austria's first Olympic figure-skating champion in 1924, and Karl Schäfer, twice Olympic champion. Bombs destroyed the rink in 1945, it reopened in 1946, and in 1974 a new rink opened on the roof of the department store.
