Vienna's oldest ice-sport club and its 6,000 m² open-air artificial ice rink at the Heumarkt since 1901

The Wiener Eislauf-Verein calls itself Vienna's largest and oldest ice-sport club. Founded on 7 February 1867, it had its grounds near today's Wien-Mitte station before the turn of the century and opened its new rink at the Heumarkt on 6 January 1901 with 10,000 m². Part of it became artificial ice in 1912, and in 1927 the whole surface was, making it the largest open-air artificial ice rink in the world. Jackson Haines first performed on the club's ice in 1868, the first international figure-skating competition was held there in 1881, and Herma Szabó won the club's first Olympic gold in 1924 and Trixi Schuba the most recent, in 1972.

Today the ice covers more than 6,000 square metres and serves public skating as well as figure skating, ice dance, hockey, freestyle and ice-stock shooting. The 2026/27 season starts in early November, with the exact date still to be announced.
