The City of Vienna decided in 1989 to build the hall, then called the Albert-Schultz-Halle, because the 1996 Group A ice hockey World Championship needed a modern arena. The first hockey game was played there in January 1995. The original complex had one large arena for 4,500 spectators, a small hall, an open-air rink and a bowling alley.
A rebuild that ended in 2011 raised the main hall to 7,000 seats and added a third ice hall for 1,000 people; the first game in the renovated arena was played on 11 August 2011 against Kärpät Oulu. The building belongs to the City of Vienna and has been leased and run by the Vienna Capitals since 1 May 2009. It carried the name of the former district head Albert Schultz until 2018, then the name Erste Bank Arena for three years, and was called Steffl Arena from November 2021.
Halle 1 is mainly for ice hockey, while public and school skating take place in Halles 2 and 3. Each of the three halls has 1,800 square metres of ice, and Halle 2 holds up to 800 guests during public skating. The Vienna Capitals play in the building, and the EAC Junior Capitals are its youth hockey club.
