Opened on 1 December 1931 on the Adlisberg, with 6,000 square metres of open ice.
The Dolder Kunsteisbahn was built in 1930 and 1931 by the architects Witzig and Begert and counted at the time among the most modern and largest open-air rinks in Europe. It opened on 1 December 1931 and soon became one of Zurich's most popular leisure destinations; games of the 1939 ice hockey World Championship were played on its ice. In 1961 the ice surface was extended and a new entrance building put up, and the curling hall that stands today followed between 1961 and 1964.
The city of Zurich took a majority stake in 1996, and the site has been in public hands since. A thorough technical renovation between 2015 and 2017 brought a modernised cooling plant and a renewed ice surface. Today the Dolder offers 6,000 square metres of ice, still described as one of the largest open ice rinks in Europe, for skating, ice hockey, Eisstockschiessen and Chneble. Figure skater Denise Biellmann can still be found on the ice, helping to bring on the next generation.
