Wallisellen's open 1960s rink, roofed and rebuilt between 2018 and 2021
The Kunsteisbahn Wallisellen was built at the end of the 1960s as an open rink. It was in good condition but no longer met technical, safety and hygiene requirements. The lack of a roof made training and championship matches hard for the clubs, and the locker rooms could not cope with the growing number of athletes. The refrigeration plant, the ice surfaces and the boards all needed repair.
The voters of Wallisellen approved the roofing and renovation of the sports and recreation centre on 25 November 2018. The plan called for 13 new changing rooms, buildings made of prefabricated timber elements and a light steel roof over the playing field and the building wings, topped with a solar installation. One playing field was moved about 2.5 metres to the southeast, and because of poor ground the outdoor ice fields stand on a slab carried on cast-in-place piles.
Work went on while the winter operation continued, and the municipality expected its modernised, Minergie-certified centre in autumn 2021.
