Zurich's Heuried: a 1964 open rink replaced by a timber ice hall in 2017

The Sportzentrum Heuried was built in 1964 by the architects Hans Litz and Fritz Schwarz as one of the first and largest leisure facilities in the city of Zurich. Its idea was to combine sport, play and recreation in summer and winter: an open-air pool, an open artificial ice rink, football and tennis pitches and a community centre. To allow today's extension, the city council made a political trade in 2001, protecting the Letzigraben pool by Max Frisch and releasing Heuried from the inventory of protected buildings.

The new ice hall was built between 2015 and 2017, with the pool renovation finishing in 2018, and received a Prix Lignum recognition in 2018. The building covers over 9,000 square metres, its entire roof structure is timber, and the 2,300 square metre ice hall sits at ground level behind the entrance staircase.

Ice fields are big energy consumers, so saving energy was the first rule: the building meets the Minergie standard for ice sports facilities, and waste heat from refrigeration machines running on CO2, a novelty, supplies hot water to the sports centre and the neighbouring community centre.
