Streetsville's community-built arena, open since 1961

The Vic Johnston Community Centre opened in 1961 as the Streetsville and District Community Centre, built by the town after residents realized in 1958 that their children had to travel to Brampton to play hockey. A committee canvassed the town door to door for the building costs, and the first board of directors, Vic Johnston among them, guaranteed the mortgage when the bank wanted more collateral. Artificial ice did not arrive until the second year of operation. On June 25, 1973, after Johnston's death, the centre was renamed in his honour.

It remains the only independent, community-operated not-for-profit arena and community centre in Mississauga, and one of the few left in southern Ontario; no government money went into building it or its day-to-day operation. The seating gives a view of the ice surface. The Streetsville Hockey League and the Streetsville Tigers are its home teams today, and it was the home arena of the Streetsville Derbys, who won the Central Junior B championship eight times between 1976 and 1986, took the 1979 Sutherland Cup as All-Ontario champions and hosted the 2006 Royal Bank Cup, the national Junior A championship.

The arena floor and ice plant were replaced in the mid-1990s, and a CA$8 million renovation in 2008 renewed the whole facility. The building has operated continuously since 1961.
