Two NHL sheets since the 2025 rebuild
Mount Vernon Rec Center opened in 1974. After years of flooded locker rooms in the rain and a failed ice rink chiller, the Fairfax County Park Authority closed it at the end of 2022 for a renovation whose cost rose from $40.7 million to $74 million.
The ice rinks reopened on June 9, 2025, with the building expanded by about 75,000 square feet. The arena now has two NHL-size rinks, the Blue Rink and the Red Rink, each 200 by 85 feet.
Hockey runs deep here. Potomac Senior Hockey, for men and women over 40, calls itself the oldest senior hockey organization continually operating in the mid-Atlantic and has played at Mount Vernon for 50 years, and the NOVA Ice Dogs youth club counts it as home rink. Capital Theatre On Ice of the Washington Figure Skating Club, an inclusive adult recreational league and a short-track speedskating club also skate here.
