Built by volunteers in an old 84 Lumber warehouse

Haymarket Iceplex opened in 2011 with two sheets of ice, and it exists because of a snowstorm. On February 6, 2010, a very heavy snowfall collapsed the Prince William Ice Center, home of the Prince William Hockey Club. With nothing more than regular members' dues and volunteer labor, the club installed an ice rink inside an old 84 Lumber warehouse building in Haymarket over a span of about ten weeks.

The Piedmont Hockey Club formed in spring 2011 to play out of the former "Lumberyard", fielding travel and house teams from the 2011-12 season as a member of USA Hockey and the PVAHA. The Iceplex remains the home of the Piedmont Predators today, and its ice also carries house, travel and adult hockey leagues, a synchronized skating program, and freestyle sessions for figure skaters who have passed Basic 6.

The building has since been extended with a 29,325-square-foot regulation indoor rink addition, which brought seven new locker rooms, office space and a new two-level public entrance, finished in split-face block with a glass curtain wall at the main door.
