Leesburg's two-rink training center, opened in 2019 and rescued from closure by new owners in 2025.
Ion International Training Center opened in Leesburg in 2019, founded by Romanian national figure skating champion Luiz Taifas and his wife, Mitra Setayesh. The 100,000-square-foot arena has two NHL-size rinks, stadium seating and a full-service gym, and now operates as ION: The Rinks at Compass Creek.
Its future was in doubt in early 2025. With the rink scheduled to close, parents, coaches and players packed the Leesburg Town Council chambers on February 25, and on April 11 an investment group announced it was taking over ownership. That July, the Loudoun Knights hockey community turned out for an arena-wide clean-up day.
ION is the official home of the Compass Creek House Hockey Club, the Loudoun Knights and the Washington Little Capitals, brought back the NHL Future Caps Learn to Play program in fall 2025, and hosts the Loudoun Curling Club. Its skating programs are led by WISA, founded in 2003; ice dancers Cesanek and Yehorov moved their training here in 2020, and world champion Ilia Malinin performed here in 2024.
