One of about five member-owned ice rinks in the United States
The Skating Club of Wilmington opened its indoor rink in March 1964, giving Wilmington ice for nine and a half months a year. The club dates to 1955, when the Price Run Rink opened on February 14 with experimental portable ice-making machinery. Members incorporated the club on March 3, 1961, and three years later skated on their own ice for the first time.
The rink on Carruthers Lane is one of about five ice rinks in the United States owned and operated by its members. Locker rooms were added to the original bare-bones structure in 1965; the arches holding up the roof were refurbished in 1995. In April 1995 the club hosted the first United States Adult Figure Skating Championships sanctioned by the USFSA, and coach Priscilla Hill moved here in 2007. The Wilmington Nighthawks Youth Hockey Club practices and plays here, and in 2019 one of its five age levels had a wait list.
In spring 1989 the club sold 2.72 acres of undeveloped land to pay for renovations that made the rink a year-round facility, with a new refrigeration system, a longer ice surface and a fully enclosed barrier with hockey boxes. In 2019 two-time Olympian Johnny Weir flew home from filming in Canada to perform for the club.
