Kirkwood's speedskating rink

Kirkwood's rink sits inside the Kirkwood Community Center, a city landmark since 1966. It has been home to the Gateway Speedskating Club since 1973, and it opened as a fully enclosed ice arena in 1999. It brings in more net revenue than any other city-owned recreation facility.

Because its cooling system used R-22 freon, a coolant being phased out, the city awarded a contract of up to $5.54 million to replace the refrigeration system, some five miles of cooling pipes, the skating surface, flooring and dasher boards, and to refurbish the building's structural steel. A new ammonia refrigeration plant went in, and the rink reopened on August 1, 2026, under budget. The work closed out more than two years of construction at the community center, which included $11 million in earlier modernization projects.

The Gateway Speedskating Club was formed in 1963 by families who wanted to do something together for their skating kids, and it has sent skaters to the Olympics. It has held its annual Gateway Championships at the rink for more than 50 consecutive years, and the rink also hosted the Missouri State Speedskating Championships in 2002.
