Village-owned since 1995; home to Twin Bridges Hockey, East Alton Skating Academy and SIUE hockey
East Alton Ice Arena grew out of a letter. In July 1993 Larry Thatcher and a group of area citizens wrote proposing an ice rink for the area, and after a feasibility study the project went from a private concern to a village-run one. The arena opened in 1995 as a modest facility and has been renovated several times since. It is owned by the Village of East Alton and run, together with the Skater's Edge Pro Shop, by a not-for-profit corporation.
The ice is home to the East Alton Skating Academy, a US Figure Skating member club, and the Twin Bridges Hockey Association, whose Twin Bridges Lightning is a volunteer, not-for-profit youth program. Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and several Mississippi Valley Club Hockey Association high school teams play their games here, and the arena was a venue for St. Louis Olympic Festival hockey and figure skating.
Thatcher, known as the 'Father of Metro-East Hockey' and one of the founders of the MVCHA, was the arena's longtime manager. He was inducted into the St. Louis Hockey Hall of Fame as a Builder of the Game in 2017 and retired in June 2025, 32 years after he first floated the idea of the rink.
