The Granite City Ice Rink in Wilson Park opened on October 26, 1967, after a bond issue passed in December 1965 and construction began in 1966. It was inspired by the skating that took place in winter in a low area of the park.
The rink is 185 feet long and 85 feet wide, close to NHL size, under a high ceiling in an open-air, pavilion-style structure. Hockey players from 12 high school teams and a youth hockey organization use it, and the program holds an ice show every year.
The 50th season, in 2017, started a month late after a large glulam beam over the ice cracked. The repair came with an addition of four changing rooms and a multipurpose room. In the off-season the building hosts the park district's summer recreation program and the annual Easter sunrise service.
