Two NHL-size sheets built for McKendree hockey
McKendree Metro Rec Plex grew out of a development announced in November 2014 for 45 acres at Scott-Troy Road and Illinois Route 50 in O’Fallon, with the Rec Plex as its anchor. Ground was broken on October 15, 2015, and the building opened for use in January 2017. The groundbreaking announcement named it the future home of McKendree University’s hockey and aquatic teams and of the Southern Illinois Ice Hawks youth hockey association, whose leaders spoke of a two-and-a-half-year effort to establish a new home rink.
The complex holds two NHL-size rinks alongside an aquatic center with a 10-lane championship pool. McKendree’s hockey teams practice and host games on the main competition ice. The first collegiate event in the building came on January 14, 2017, when the men’s Division 2 team beat Northern Illinois University 12-2 in front of a capacity crowd of 1,500.
Adult leagues use the ice too: the Grumpy Old Men Hockey League for players 35 and older, and the co-ed Mid America Hockey League for players 18 and up. Lessons range from a first introduction to skating with props and music to progressive group lessons for figure skaters.
