A 1994 Olympic Festival venue with three sheets of ice
The St. Peters Rec-Plex was built in 1994 and opened with the U.S. Olympic Festival’s aquatic events. Ten years later it hosted the 2004 U.S. Olympic Diving Trials, and in 2007 an expansion nearly doubled the building to 236,000 square feet and added the Rec-Plex South facility.
Today the complex has three NHL-size ice rinks: the North Rink, where adult drop-in hockey and most stick and puck sessions run, and rinks at Rec-Plex South. It is home to the St. Peters Figure Skating Association, and the city partners with the St. Peters Hockey Club to take young players from learning to skate through beginner hockey to club play. In one rink, bleachers that once sat directly on the concrete slab and blocked sightlines have been raised.
Shows by students of the Rec-Plex Skate Academy have become some of the city’s more popular events: a Winter Wonderland on Ice show in December and a Spring Ice Show in May. The academy has added a new candlelight exhibition with a spooky theme.
