South Burlington's twin NHL-size rinks, opened in 1995, home of Saint Michael's College hockey.
C. Douglas Cairns Recreation Arena opened in South Burlington in October 1995 and added a second sheet of ice in October 2001. Both rinks are NHL size, 85 by 200 feet, with four general-use locker rooms each. The original rink seats 600, with a second-story, center-ice press box and a warming room overlooking the ice, and the second rink seats 400. The Cairns Cafe in the central lobby and a pro shop that carries Jackson and Riedell figure skates round out the building.
Saint Michael's College men's and women's hockey moved here for the 2001–02 season from the Essex Skating Facility, and the Purple Knights still call it home, along with the University of Vermont club hockey team, South Burlington's high school team and several other high school teams.
The arena was once home to the Green Mountain Glades junior team, which later moved to Portland, Maine, and in 2012 it served as a venue for the IIHF Women's World Championship alongside Gutterson Fieldhouse.
