Montpelier's 1998 civic arena, home ice for the U32 High School and Black Bears hockey teams
Central Vermont Memorial Civic Center opened in December 1998, after local citizens and the surrounding municipalities spent four years campaigning for a multipurpose building that could hold recreation and civic events in Montpelier. In the 27-plus years since, the Civic Center counts more than 20,000 children who have had a place to play here.
It is the home rink of the U32 High School Hockey teams and the Black Bears youth hockey organization, whose games run from October into February. Central Vermont Pioneers Sled Hockey, Vermont Flames Hockey and the adult Capital Hockey Club share the ice around them, and over the years the building has added broomball and stick and puck alongside hockey and public skating.
The ice is not only for hockey. The Central Vermont Women's Broomball League plays its competitive season here, and the building doubles as the home of Capital Soccer Club Futsal and the Capital Soccer Futsal League. Public skating sessions are sponsored by the Montpelier Department of Recreation.
