NHL-size rink at the base of Jay Peak

The Ice Haus Arena opened in May 2010 at the base of Jay Peak Resort, on Tramside. Seven Days noted that most rinks sit in towns, not several miles up a snowy access road, and that the new arena gave this rural corner of the Northeast Kingdom something it never had: a rink where high school teams could practice and young figure skaters could train.

It is a full NHL-size sheet, 85 by 200 feet, with four locker rooms, rental and repair space, bleachers for 400 spectators, standing room for 300 more and an electric Zamboni. Hockey and figure skating are both based here.

In its first fall the rink hosted games of the Green Mountain Glades, a precollegiate program for 16- to 20-year-olds, and the resort still books regional leagues, tournaments, summer camps and figure skating training on the ice. Its first figure-skating director hoped the rink would give skiers something to do after a day on the slopes.
