Woodstock's community arena, opened in 2003 and the first net-zero ice arena in the U.S.

Union Arena Community Center opened in 2003 on the grounds of Woodstock Union High School, and it is a year-round facility with an 84-by-200-foot ice sheet. In the summer of 2021 it completed a six-year project to become the first net-zero ice arena in the U.S., reducing energy consumption by 68 percent and producing the remaining 32 percent with a rooftop solar array.

The retrofit replaced the dehumidifier, cooling tower, boiler, digital controls and refrigeration components and added a heat recovery system that reuses the compressors' waste heat for hot water, resurfacer fill water and the ice melt pit. The arena's net-zero team has since taught classes for Efficiency Vermont, hosting other ice arena operators.

The arena serves over 20,000 users each year, and its leaders say it is one of the only ice rinks that heats the air in the entire rink area. It is home to youth and adult hockey programs, figure skating and public skating.
