Waterbury's non-profit arena, home of the Harwood Highlanders

The Ice Center in Waterbury opened in 2003 as a non-profit, community-based arena, built with support from the community and area businesses. Since then it has been home to Harwood High School and youth hockey teams, local figure skaters and a number of adult and youth hockey leagues.

The building is the home rink of the Harwood Highlanders: both the boys' and girls' varsity hockey teams play here, and the boys took the Division II state championship in 2020. Youth hockey comes through the Central Vermont Black Bears, a club formed in 2022 when four local associations, BYSA, CVSA, HYHA and NAHA, merged; the Black Bears split their ice between Waterbury and rinks in Northfield, Montpelier and Barre. Figure-skating coach Jennifer Lupia, the 2017 World Figure silver medalist, teaches here.

Sled hockey has a home here too in the Central Vermont Pioneers, three-time Vermont state champions and two-time Empire State Games gold medalists, most of whose players have a physical challenge that makes a hockey sled the only way they can play. High school game nights have become a weekly evening event through the season, with friends, family and local residents coming out to support the boys' and girls' teams.
