Middlebury's community-funded rink, opened in 1993 and run by Friends of Middlebury Hockey
The Memorial Sports Center opened in 1993 after a community fundraising campaign that combined donations, countless volunteer hours and in-kind services. The town kept investing: in 1995 the original temporary ice system was upgraded to a seasonal one, and in 2000 permanent refrigeration was installed.
Donated boards and bleachers followed, along with a new Zamboni room. Friends of Middlebury Hockey, founded in 1979, has managed and operated the building throughout its existence, even after it was signed over to the Town of Middlebury; the Memorial Sports Center Commission provides fundraising and oversight, including the banner advertising program.
During the winter ice season, October through April, the rink hosts the Middlebury Amateur Hockey Association, Middlebury Union High School and numerous adult and club teams. The rest of the year it holds community events such as graduation ceremonies.
